Mesa de Sombras - Shadow table
Modular installation in Kyoto.
Large tubular steel table, projected in shadows.
The concept behind this piece is the perception of an undefined invisible support.
The shadows cast on the tubes create a two-dimensional visual effect, making the third dimension imperceptible.
The purpose of this installation is to inhabit the space.
This work will be accompanied by an edible piece that will serve to flavor the atmosphere.
Below, I will detail the parameters necessary for its production and assembly, as well as its operation for users.
Possible impact of the installation
With Mesa de Sombras, my idea is to construct an object that could be inhabited and shared with other artists and visitors.
The probability that the design of an environment influences us and reveals new information to us is very real. Our own interpretation should show us what we can do with that information.
Mesa de Sombras may have the ability to confuse us and show us other planes and points of view that may seem unreal; only our own judgment will offer us a useful answer for ourselves.
It is an object to be used.
Dimensions of the installation:
Tubular structure measuring 4 meters x 2.5 meters x 1.50 meters high.
Space required for assembly:
Space of at least 30 square meters.
Power supply required for the lights.
Capacity of the installation:
The idea is a maximum of 8 people at a time, but it is possible to organize standing events with more users, depending on the social needs of the space.
Special installation size options:
At the group's request, pieces of different sizes could be created for other projects linked to the installation (larger dimensions).
Seating:
We will look for 8 antique wooden stools, preferably from an old workshop or factory, for a table height of 75 cm.
Sound:
The sound of the installation is linked to the work of Astral Sound. We will reproduce it using Bluetooth speakers.
Flavor:
The flavor user in this first stage of the installation will be the Arroz de manantial project.
Table assembly time:
Once all the materials are available, it will take 15 days to weld and adjust the pieces. (Mock-ups and prototypes have already been created in Barcelona to advance the work.) The table will be completely removable. This way, it can be moved and installed at any time and on any surface. Similarly, its size can be expanded and modified at any time.
Assembly:
As it is detachable, its assembly and transport are entirely feasible. During installation, improvements can be made so that the piece can be adapted to new perspectives or needs. As it is inhabited, constant reflection and communication can constantly influence its operation. It is a living object.
Lights:
The sharp lights cast harsh shadows on the table, creating the illusion that the table is also a shadow.
They will be hidden in the structures.
With this action, we want to alter the perception of reality and how our own minds can modify any parameter.
Balance:
Most of the structure will be 5 mm thick, making it a piece that, although stable, will also be delicate. It should give the sensation of non-existence, hence the need to work from fragility.
Flavor user of the installation
“The shadow table” installation will be accompanied by three food items to build the gastronomic link.
Flavor user day 19 - Esferas Gomu
Flavor User day 32 - Arroz de manantial
Flavor User day 9 - Programmed water.
These pieces can be used while the installation is open.
To jointly construct an abstract language.
Flavor user day 19 - Gomu spheres.
Different spheres the size of a soybean, with a primary flavor that will serve as taste programming. Using these pieces, we will awaken the sense of taste and begin to activate its functions.
The spheres are an activation element.
The presentation and service will be detailed later, as these options can be adapted to the type of venue and how it operates.
Flavor user day 32 - Arroz de manantial.
Rice boiled and rested with vinegar, served at room temperature.
We will choose a rare variety of rice, preferably harvested near a mountain.
This rice will be boiled and washed with water extracted from a natural spring.
(If there is a connection between the mountain near the rice field and the spring water, that would be great, but it is not essential).
The presentation and service will be detailed later, as these options can be adapted to the type of venue and how it operates.
Flavor User Day 9 - Programmed water.
Experimental concept of water treatment through rest, agitation, and presence.
This is how the water will be treated for the creation of these pieces.
A modified raw material.
We will use this technique to change the structure of spring water.
It will be the drink of the installation.
All these elements will accompany the installation as they are also part of it. Possible sensory activators.
Presentation
Once the piece has been assembled and is ready for presentation, and the necessary tests have been carried out to integrate all the concepts, days and times will be designated to show the work in groups of up to 8 people for the experience per shift.
Duration of the experience: 30 min (this time may be modified or maintained based on the first comprehensive tests in the space).
Soha will be in charge of the guest list and also of deciding who will visit the installation.
“Mesa de sombras” ( Shadow table) was born from the connection with the Soha group, and its construction and dissemination will be carried out under the group's facilities in Gojo.
Our vision is to promote the radical nature of the abstract and how this experience can bring about lasting changes in our perception.
Sharing and growing under these parameters is a way of life and a link to the extreme effort of their practice.
I hope that this small contribution will be the beginning of a solid relationship with an eye to the future and new generations.
